Capital Power Corporation is currently seeking an innovative and results-oriented individual to join our mighty Business Development USA team headquartered in Boston, MA.

As an Origination Manager, you will lead the commercialization efforts on Capital Power’s US development sites by originating, negotiating, and finalizing energy, REC, and/or capacity offtake agreements or structured products and to support the origination and acquisition of new development sites. This includes growing Capital Power’s customer base in all US markets. You may also be involved in supporting significant M&A files and other business development needs as they arise.

You will contribute to our team by

  • Originating and maintaining relationships with potential US customers, offtakers and financial institutions.

  • Originating, negotiating and finalizing new power purchase agreements, structured financial products (hedges/collars/puts, etc.) and capacity offtake agreements for the US development sites, and supporting origination for the company’s existing fleet of US assets.

  • Leading the identification of and response to utility, C&I, and other potential offtaker RFPs that are relevant to the development sites.

  • Being responsible for the development and the execution of Business Development’s structured commodity products strategy.

  • Leading the pricing and execution of structured products.

  • Supporting committed capital targets through the commercialization of the development sites.

  • Supporting company’s regulatory strategy through providing insight into customer market intelligence.

  • Occasionally supporting the M&A team by leading the acquisition process for the acquisition of existing assets in the US.

  • Determining budget-year strategic commercial and value creation targets and objectives.

  • Handling project budgets related to the review of new site acquisitions.

  • Making recommendations for people and strategic decisions for the US Business Development team.

  • Providing recommendations for strategic decisions and plans relating to responses to RFPs.

  • Leading the strategic decision making relating to structured commodity products.

  • Responsible for developing and handling  G&A budget input for respective budget year activity.

  • Responsible for fostering cross-functional expertise to corporate forecasting, regulatory, analytical or any other corporate process that could leverage customer market information.

  • Per the asset integration development process, responsible for leading cross-functional teams in the evaluation of the acquisition of new development sites  and occasionally for operating assets.

  • Responsible for team and functional business planning through 2 to 3 years forward as part of larger Business Development business plan.

  • Responsible for recommending required systems and processes to support and optimize Origination efforts.

  • Responsible for ensuring team aligns to internal transaction-based policies, procedures and metrics.

  • Resolving highly complex issues relating to the origination function.

  • Cross-functional responsibility for leading development teams using internal and external processes..

  • Coordinating of regulatory processes and valuation of assets and products.

  • Applying the best communication practices inside and outside of Business Development.

  • Understanding and maintaining compliance with all internal policy and procedures (commodity, CESAP, credit, safety).

  • Guiding the pricing of non-standard (complex) products. Ensuring product pricing properly accounts for credit and commodity risk.

  • Exemplifying Capital Power’s best-in-class safety culture.

  • Effectively engaging and developing customer relationships to build commercial opportunities across all US-based market segments and companies.

  • Maintaining key external relationships with traders at financial institutions to aid in acquiring alternative offtake structures.

  • Targeting, developing and presenting external counterparty materials to middle and upper-management levels.

  • Actively participating, engaging and coordinating with the rest of the Business Development, Commodity Portfolio Management and Commercial Management teams.

  • Building awareness of Business Development internally by engaging collaborators through formal and informal boot camps.

 

What you will bring to the role  

Education

  • Undergraduate degree in Marketing, Finance, Economics, and/or Engineering.

  • 5 to 9 years of related experience.

  • Commercial related designations (CFA, ERP, CBV) would be considered an asset.

  • Must have advanced proficiency in the MS Office Suite (CRM, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Project).

  • Understanding of commodity risk and trading, specifically electricity in the United States.

  • Coordination of complex projects with multiple stakeholders and tasks across 1 to 3-year durations.

  • Must have an operational understanding of the roles and responsibilities of a commercially focused front, middle and back office business.

  • Ideal candidate would have successfully negotiated power purchase agreements for utility scale wind, solar, or conventional power generating assets previously.

Working Conditions:

  • Primarily Office, hybrid work from home arrangements or remote.

  • May require occasional Canadian / US travel.

This position will remain open until a suitable candidate is found.

As this is a safety sensitive position, clearance of a pre-employment drug test is required.
