The Walrus

  • Salary/Rate 55000 – 60000
  • Experience Level Associate

Features Editor

The Walrus provokes new thinking and sparks conversation on matters vital to Canadians. As a registered charity, we publish independent, fact-based journalism, produce national, ideas-focused events, and train emerging professionals in publishing and non-profit management. The Walrus is invested in the idea that a healthy society relies on informed citizens.

The Walrus is seeking a Features Editor to join our editorial staff. This is a one-year contract position, starting December 5, 2022.

The Features Editor will commission and edit articles suited to a national general interest audience. Those subjects will include The Walrus’s core areas of focus in science, business, politics, arts and culture, and Canada’s place in the world. The ideal candidate is a seasoned editor with at least three to five years’ experience in a publishing environment.

Recognizing the range of editorial platforms at The Walrus, the Features Editor is a story-driven journalist who desires to create work that will engage our audience and spark conversations on any platform: print, digital, multimedia. But the successful candidate will be first and foremost a strong substantive and line editor who can take multiple stories per month through production. The publishing schedule at The Walrus includes daily, weekly, and long-term deadlines, and the successful candidate is expected to work quickly and collaboratively.

The Features Editor is expected to be a nationally-driven thinker and an omnivorous reader of Canadian and international journalism. They have a nuanced understanding of social media, including best practices for packaging and promoting stories online. Curious about the world, they are comfortable working with a diverse group of writers across Canada whose work may reflect a range of political, cultural, and ideological perspectives. As an ambassador of the mandate of The Walrus, the Features Editor will help to shape Canada’s conversation.

  • Commissioning and editing an average of 2-4 features monthly (lengths often range from 1,200 to 5,000 words)
  • Participating in weekly story meetings to discuss ideas and develop short- and long-term projects
  • Reviewing work by others and providing editorial feedback
  • Mentoring junior staff (including The Walrus Editorial Fellows) on request
  • The successful candidate may be asked to represent The Walrus on panels and at professional events.

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience
  • Demonstrated ability to produce stories with a high degree of engagement or impact
  • Familiarity with standard production processes for print and digital publishing channels is expected; experience with WordPress and/or InDesign is an asset
  • Ability to work independently and participate collaboratively in a team environment

The compensation package includes a salary of $55,000 – $60,000 and 10 paid vacation days.

Please consider joining our team if you have an interest in contributing to The Walrus. To apply, send a cover letter and resumé to [email protected] with the subject line “Features Editor [first and last name]” by 11:59 p.m. EST on Friday, October 14, 2022.

The Walrus supports diversity and inclusion as we work to fulfill our educational mandate. We value employment equity and strongly encourage applications from Indigenous, Black, and other racialized people; people with disabilities; people of all genders; and LGBTQ2+ people. If you require any accommodation in the recruitment process, please let us know by email at [email protected].

The Walrus office is located in downtown Toronto, but our staff are based across Canada. Though this position will be remote or hybrid for the foreseeable future, applicants must be eligible to work in Canada to qualify. Only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.
