The Opportunity
Reporting to the Manager, Community and Cultural Development, the Coordinator, Culture and Engagement will partner with internal and external stakeholder groups to lead corporate culture change and community outreach initiatives and ensure that diversity and inclusion strategies and programs are embedded within core processes and day-to-day operations across the Town of Caledon. The coordinator is responsible for the coordination and implementation of the Town’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion (DEI) and Framework and Indigenous Engagement Protocol (IEP). This position implements strategies, programs, projects, policies and processes. This role drives results in the organization by raising awareness, providing education, and mobilizing stakeholders toward meaningful change through continuous improvement. This position will support various advisory committees and working groups to embed DEI and IEP within the fabric of corporate culture, and community engagement. The role is instrumental in transforming Caledon’s culture, and ensures that programs and initiatives are practical, effective, and adhere to policies, best practices, and legislation. As the Coordinator, Culture and Engagement, you will perform the following duties, including but not limited to:
- Execute the implementation plans and communication strategies for the Town’s DEI and IEP frameworks in collaboration with Town staff and other agencies. Ensure the execution of the plan consistent with the Council Workplan and is in line with the budget.
- Provide advice and expertise to the Corporate Leadership Team, Senior Leadership Team, Office of the CAO and Council regarding DEI and IEP initiatives.
- Review current practices, policies and legislation, assessing impact on the Town’s goals. Identify internal and external trends and recognize opportunities to increase diversity within the Town’s workforce and enhance corporate practices.
- Enhance corporate culture by collaborating with Corporate Leadership to ensure that the principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, anti-oppression, and anti-racism are integrated into management processes.
- Conduct, research and incorporate findings in reports and recommendations for new initiatives or programs; share information and best practices gathered from municipal associations and networks.
- Perform additional duties and undertake special projects as assigned.
The Ideal Candidate
We are seeking a driven professional with a post-secondary degree in Diversity and Inclusion, Sociology, Social Sciences, Business/Public Administration or a closely related field. DEI certification (i.e. Canadian Certified Diversity and Inclusion Professional) or demonstrated continuous learning is an asset. Our ideal candidate has 3 years’ experience researching, developing, managing and implementing diversity, equity and inclusion and/or human rights programs and strategies preferably in the public sector. This candidate should also have a minimum of 3 years’ experience leading projects.
The ideal candidate will have demonstrated ability to interpret legislation such as the Employment Standards Act and Occupational Health & Safety Act, with a strong understanding of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, Ontario’s Human Rights Code, Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and related legislation.
We are seeking an individual with superior relationship building skills, knowledge of community partners and programs related to issues of diversity, equity, inclusion and/or human rights.
This candidate will have lived experience as a member of one of several marginalized groups with a deep understanding of the social, political, cultural, spiritual, health and economic history, challenges and opportunities relevant to Indigenous, Black and other racialized people, persons with disabilities, members of the 2SLGBTQ+ communities and women.
The successful candidate for the Coordinator, Culture and Engagement (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion) will be required to work a flexible schedule, including in the office, remotely and after hours (as required).
This position offers a salary range of $75,892.79 – $93,006.93 plus a competitive benefit package.
